Japan, U.S. Sign Treaty to Boost Air Travel

Japan and the U.S. signed a treaty that will reduce barriers to flights between the countries and encourage collaboration between the countries’ airlines, Bloomberg News reported.

“I am optimistic that we will see an increase in the numbers of passengers traveling between our countries,” said U.S. Ambassador John Roos, after signing the treaty in Tokyo.

United, Continental See Earnings Jump on Demand for Travel

United Airlines and Continental Airlines reported healthy third-quarter earnings thanks to higher ticket prices and stronger demand for air travel.

United reported earnings of $2.12 per share, excluding some items, Bloomberg News said. Continental’s earnings were $2.24 a share.

Delayed Flights Cost U.S. Economy $32.9 Billion a Year

Delayed flights cost the U.S. economy a total of $32.9 billion every year, according to a new study of domestic flights.

More than half that figure is money out of the pockets of passengers, who are forced to spend money on items including food and hotel rooms while they wait for their plane, according to a report commissioned by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Amtrak Reports Record Passenger Numbers

Amtrak set an annual ridership record of 28.7 million passengers for the fiscal year ended September 30. That’s 5.7% more than in fiscal 2009.

Ticket revenue rose 9% to $1.74 billion, Amtrak said in a statement.
