A small drop in Japanese factory output meant big headaches for manufacturers today as the Nikkei 225 Index fell 2%. China’s Shanghai Composite rose 1.7% and in Hong Kong the Hang Seng Index inched down 0.1%.

In Asia Wednesday Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index climbed 1.2% to 22,379 and China’s Shanghai Composite index remained virtually unchanged at 2,611. In Japan the Nikkei 225 Index rose 0.7% to end the day at 9,559.

Asian economies will grow by 8.2% in 2010, according to a new report.
“Strong export recovery, robust private demand, and the sustained effects of stimulus policies allowed the region to experience solid growth in the first half of 2010,” The Asian Development Bank said. “This improved performance is broad-based and is projected to carry on for the rest of the year.”

A bankruptcy filing by Takefuji Corp., one of Japan’s biggest lenders, sent the Nikkei tumbling more than 1% Tuesday. The news sent Takefuji’s stock down 32%, dragging other Japanese lenders lower as well.
