United Airlines and Continental Airlines reported healthy third-quarter earnings thanks to higher ticket prices and stronger demand for air travel.
United reported earnings of $2.12 per share, excluding some items, Bloomberg News said. Continental’s earnings were $2.24 a share.

Delayed flights cost the U.S. economy a total of $32.9 billion every year, according to a new study of domestic flights.
More than half that figure is money out of the pockets of passengers, who are forced to spend money on items including food and hotel rooms while they wait for their plane, according to a report commissioned by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Virgin Galactic, which aims to be the world’s first commercial space carrier, successfully tested its suborbital spaceship, Enterprise.
Enterprise made its first solo test flight in California on Sunday, BBC News reported. The spaceship was carried to 45,000 feet by a plane, then dropped to glide back to earth.

The long-awaited Boeing 787 Dreamliner will be ready for service early next year.
Rolls-Royce, which supplies some of the engines used in the 787 Dreamliner, will meet with Boeing (BA) this week to work out plans to recover from an engine blow-out last month, Bloomberg News said.
