Jobless Americans Rattle Asian Markets

Rising applications in the U.S. for unemployment claims sent Asian shares lower today. In Japan the Nikkei 225 Index slid 0.9% and in China the Shanghai Composite Index slipped 1.3%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng inched up 0.2%.

Many developing countries are joining the list of top countries for outsourcing, while nations such as Australia, Canada and Israel have fallen off.

The U.S. is hardly alone in losing work to cheaper skilled labor in foreign countries. Australia, Canada and Israel, among others, have dropped off Gartner’s list of the top 30 countries for outsourcing. Here’s where IT and business-processing jobs are heading.

Initial Jobless Claims Fall Again, to 420,000

Initial jobless claims fall to 420,000

The slowly improving tone to the U.S. job market continued with last week’s numbers for new unemployment claims. The less volatile four-week moving average also dropped again, to 422,750. That’s its lowest level since August 2008.
